My purple eyes are caused by a rare genetic variant that makes my iris form tiny, crystal-like structures that bend light toward the violet end of the spectrum. I also produce slightly less melanin than most people, so that violet shimmer isn’t covered up. Together, those traits give my eyes their amethyst color, something that runs only in a few old bloodlines of my family.
