Does any of you know why or how do people benefit from having short hair sides, medium or longer??

I had long sides and they were making me look weird and wider, but now I look weird and don't understand the exact reason.
I will grow them a little because when they are like medium short I look decent

Could that be related to my narrow jaw or some shit like that?
