never thought about it but it makes total sense since its called alcohol. its from al-kohl, kohl being a powder used for eyeliners. turns out the arabs were the first ones to distillate wine, romans tried doing this centuries before but failed to do so. its kinda funny since most arabs dont drink alcohol.

and it was banned for a good reason, intoxicated people behave in a way they cannot control themselves. i have heard the hadith of drunk people arriving at the mosque attempting their prayers lol

It was banned gradually in 3 steps.

I don't remember the first one but the second one if i'm not mistaken was to not pray while being drank and the third one was to completely ban it. We have an example on this that things which are difficult addictions should be banned gradually.

to be honest i see it from another perspective. even these days there are islamic people who drink alcohol. they should have known better since its already been deemed impermissible for centuries. those people back then had no clue so it was acceptable. so the punishment weighs heavier for todays people, since they shouldnt have been doing things islam hasa declared impermissible.
