1. Physical Appearance and the "Foreign Origin" Theories

British ethnographers frequently noted that Gujjars, particularly those in the North-West Frontier, Punjab, and Kashmir, possessed distinct physical traits that set them apart from surrounding populations. These observations fueled several colonial theories about their origins.

  • Tall, Fair, and "Aryan" Features: British writers frequently described Gujjars as having lighter skin, tall statures, and sharp facial features. Sir George Campbell, a prominent British administrator, classified them as an "Aryan race."

The Kashmir and Himalayan Gujjars: Frederick Drew, a British geologist and author of The Jummoo and Kashmir Territories: A Geographical Account (1875), specifically noted their appearance: "I agree with Sir George Campbell that they are an Aryan race... Some I met with had lighter eyes than common among the other tribes of the country... In figure they are tall and gaunt." Walter Roper Lawrence, in The Valley of Kashmir (1895), described them as "a fine tall race of men."
