I enjoy reading crime stories because they reveal the raw, primal nature of humanity and showcase how cruel and merciless we can be. I genuinely believe that anyone is capable of extreme violence and unspeakable acts under the right circumstances.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau talks about t in his Social Contract Theory, and claimed that we are still essentially primitive, tribal beings. Forming societies and giving up certain freedoms is a relatively new development in human history, but our instincts and triggers remain rooted in ancient evolutionary behaviors.
Violence and bloodshed, whether we like it or not, are intrinsic to who we are. Crime stories fascinate me because they explore how people respond to trauma and reveal the darker, animalistic, selfish, and sadistic tendencies in those closest to us. It's a cruel world.
