when people think about "will", they don't imagine the hasty, fleeting construct that their attempts to grasp it usually manifest as.

i think human willpower works about as well in abstinence as it does in engagement. ask any alcoholic how far their own will got them

if it comes down to a single word, more helpful would be "discipline."
