I never understood "respecting the elder"

It doesn't make sense to me. Just because someone is older, I have to "respect" them?
Respect should be earned. I'm not trying to be a brat or whatsoever.
My family members always have said this shit. Anyone who feels the same?

I do but there should be a proper reasoning behind the famous saying "respect your elders"

I'm pretty sure most people "respect their elders" intuitively, without cultural programming.

There's probably a survival benefit to listening to people with more experience than you.

I imagine it's hardwired, and then we construct customs around that reality.
