I think being able to visualize and play a chess game in your head, can make you smarter in general.

I mean if you're able to store that much information in your head, and manipulate it to find viable or attempt to find viable paths or decisions that will result in success, I think it can have some transferrable effect in general problem solving ability and decision making.
