Mariuopol isn't a major city tho, Kiev and Kharkov are, Russia tried taking control of them and failed. There is a major city that Russia did take, but it's not Mariupol, it is Kherson; their attack on Kiev on the other hand was a disaster.

So far Russia has secured some victories in the southern direction (that's where Kherson is situated) but got btfo in the North (ie. in Kiev and neighbouring cities).
