I was asked English grammar in a interview for Tech Analyst

As you niggas know I had applied for the LSEG and got shortlisted and had an online interview on Microsoft Teams. Interviewing me was some LTN Britishcel in formals. Probably early-mid 30s.

The interview was going smoothly at first. He began with basic Linux commands gradually moved to intermediate topics and I handled everything confidently. We then koved on netwroking and operating system. What is Malloc, explain the TCP protcools etc. Standard stuff. Then, out of nowhere he asked What is a dangling modifier? I literally never heard that term before in my life. Usually when some interviewer asks me some kind of technical questions. Even if I don't know the answer. I know something related to it or atleast have the context of what he is asking about but this time I was completely blank.

Confused I asked him to come again and he repeated the question what is a dangling modifier in the English language as in the human english language? That made me even more unsure why was this nigga asking me english grammar questions. Did I apply to become an english teacher. I was caging internally and said I don't know.

Then he said “Mate, even I know these questions are stupid. Look at my checklist, asking this is one of the mandatory things. Let’s just get this over with” and he moved on.

He then asked, “What is a present participle?” Again I admitted I didn’t know and once again he reassured me “I’ll still check this as correct you clearly know what it is and use it properly. It’s just those -ing words like ‘running’ or ‘going’. Hahaha. Such a bizarre experience. I've given 100s of interview and never been asked english grammar lmao.

Bro I've never been asked any questions like that in any interview and I'm in the UK. That's weird asf. I think it might be one of those "weird" questions companies ask to catch out interviewees. FAANG applicants always talk about these types of questions

I've given interviews for british companies too like Bloomberg and they never asked shit like this.Sure I will clients quite a bit so probably want to make sure I am fluent in English but for some reason, this is how they've decided to test it by throwing in some obscure grammar nonsense. Dangling modifier what even is that

Yeah I don't think it's that important. Most native English speakers won't even be able to answer those grammar questions.

Native speakers can earn decent money teaching grammar and business English/interview prep.

Yes. Kinda hard to explain. Imagine the phrase Running down the street, the rain soaked me. It seems like the rain was running, doesn't it? That modifier is dangling! The modifier is just the -ing or the infinitive, blah blah blah...

You can sometimes seem silly without understanding it at least subconsciously. Sitting on the sofa, the squirrel stole my sandwich. It's a sort of descriptive tag without a clear, defined host. Just place the right noun after the modifier so it is clear.

Ludicrous to ask for your job. I'd question the purpose myself.
