I'm not old and cynical, angry, wounded or bitter. I haven't been betrayed or let down by others any more than the average Joe (or Jane). But, I still have to say, ultimately no, you shouldn't trust anyone. Or maybe, trust good people but always have a back up plan.
You will meet lovely, reliable, trustworthy, honest, kind, generous people and you will be able to trust them to some degree, such as - you can trust that your best friend, Carol, will take care of your dog up from the vet while you've been called out of town for work. But, in the end, we're all alone. You need to be able to take care of yourself, be independent, have a Plan B and not be crushed if a person isn't able to live up to expectations. Don't put your life, your happiness, your interests or anything else in someone else's hands. In the end, human beings are just naked animals with opposing thumbs, and each human being will look out for their own best interests, happiness and survival. They're not being dicks, that's just the way it is.
So, maybe, trust people but always keep an Ace held back. And trust yourself more.
