“I thought Richard was very nice—very shy. I liked him,” LaVey would
say of Richard years later.
Richard said he attended a ceremony over which LaVey presided.
Everyone was naked, and LaVey did a ritual above the unclothed body of a
woman. During the ceremony, Richard felt the ice-cold hand of Satan touch
him and he felt Satan’s presence. It shook him to his core.
Afterward, he hurried from the ceremony and called his mother in El
Paso, beseeching her to pray for him. When she asked why, he said, “I was
touched by Satan tonight, Mama. He came to me.”
She told him she’d pray for him and begged him to come home. He
refused, saying he didn’t want anything more to do with El Paso.
Mercedes hurried to church, got down on her knees, and prayed that her
youngest would not fall victim to the Lord of Darkness, that he’d come
home. To Mercedes, Satan was as real as anything in life—a car, a house, a
thunderstorm. The fact that she’d never seen him didn’t mean anything;
she’d never seen Jesus and she was sure he was there.
Richard left San Francisco and returned to L.A. He read LaVey’s second
book and became a different person—much more serious—and drew
further into himself. He was no longer Richard Ramirez, the El Paso burglar
and sometime pot dealer; he was now Richard Ramirez, the unsmiling,
mean-eyed Satanist.
