Hypergamy was not nearly as bad before the tech revolution.
Money truly did matter back then because men could hold women as financial hostages - and as social hostages due to antiquated views on divorce for women.
A 4 or 5/10 then could definitely get married and not be cheated on as they would just keep the woman in the house at all times.
If you go back even further to times when physical security was a major issue then you could get 2/10s with loving relationships if the man was big and scary looking.
None of that matters in the modern day though.

still, i think most of the "horrifying" aspects of "modern" dating are way overexaggerated by internet-dwelling shut-ins who refuse to even try. there's no guarantee you are gonna land a fairytale-tier ltr and a marriage with some angel even for legit chads, so obsessing over your odds of succeeding at that as a regular guy is just pointless. that's why my ultimate conclusion regarding this issue is that it all comes down to "brain chemistry".

another difference is not every third fucking interaction between a person A and a person B was documented/trackable via apps

people were extremely constrained back then. i can agree with the take that it's much easier for people to contact and get with others today because of apps, but the specific effect is nowhere as dramatic as doomer incels make it to be
