The pagans were generally more happy with manifesting what they wanted on Earth, and their gods usually took human, earthly forms. The Christians, with their platonic style of thinking about the material world as dark and hopeless, seem to be happy with accepting poor conditions here on Earth in exchange for the belief in another, superior, supernatural world. I think it continues even in the "secular" culture today, you see countless guys "working hard" and accepting poor treatment from their job, from their wife, and making no effort to improve or change things around them
