There is absolutely nothing to do and everything is a drive away. It's depressing to be in the middle of nowhere surrounded by stupid fat hicks with no future ... That's how you know someone is consuming /pol/ memes is that they think some trad christian paradise is waiting for them in rural Appalachia.
Even the suburbs are often subpar in this regard unless your suburb happens to have a little downtown area, which many don't if you live in a purely residential community. College towns and residential areas of cities, imo, are the ideal places to live and especially grow up. Growing up in a small area is only knowing the same twenty people for decades.
