A couple things to unpack here:

The premise is slightly off. Semen doesn't contain glucose as its main sugar — it contains fructose, produced by the seminal vesicles. Fructose serves as the primary energy source for sperm to swim.

Why it's not sweet even though fructose is a sugar:

  1. Concentration is low. The fructose concentration in semen is only around 100-300 mg/dL — much lower than something like fruit juice or soda. Sweetness perception depends heavily on concentration, and this is below the threshold where you'd clearly taste "sweet."
  2. Other components dominate the taste. Semen is a complex mixture — proteins, enzymes, citric acid, zinc, potassium, and alkaline compounds from the prostate (which give it a somewhat bitter/salty/metallic character). These flavors overpower the small amount of fructose. The prostate fluid in particular tends to taste bitter/alkaline due to its pH-buffering compounds.
  3. Taste is a mix, not additive in a simple way. Sweetness can be masked by bitterness or saltiness even when both are technically present — it's not like the flavors just average out.

So it's less "why doesn't sugar taste sweet" and more "there's too little sugar, drowned out by other flavor compounds."
