look at hypergamy. the reason hypergamy is as big as it is today is because women have been taught to think higher of themselves than they actually are (which comes from positive reinforcement in their formative years), and men have been taught to think less of themselves (which comes from negative reinforcement in their formative years). i do believe its possible for both genders to get bullied but soyciety has put women on a pedestal and made them think they can do no wrong and that they are perfect. men are bullied WAY more than women are, especially about looks.
