SSRIs are reuptake inhibitors of serotonin, basically meaning they artificially increase serotonin levels, leading to improved depression at the cost of having your emotions numbed out. MAOIs affect multiple neurotransmitters including but not limited to serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine by inhibiting monoamine oxidase, meaning an increase in these neurotransmitters as they're not being destroyed by the oxidation. The reason why SSRIs are being prescribed rather than MAOIs is because of our paranoid society that thinks MAOIs are so dangerous mainly because of the small risk of a hypertensive crisis as SOME MAOIs require a tyramine restricted diet. But also because the success rate of suicide is higher when consuming large amounts of MAOIs unlike SSRIs. Generally MAOIs are more effective than SSRIs, while they also don't cause anhedonia and sexual dysfunction

The fact that SSRIs are being prescribed as a first choice is insane. Parnate and Nardil are the 2 best MAOIs in the world and 2 of the most effective antidepressants of all time. SSRIs are dangerous.

Basically if you take MAOI's you can't eat certain foods or use psychedelic drugs, if you eat foods high in tyramine, you can legit die. But just don't eat them jfl, stuff that has tyramine are red wine, cured meats, aģed cheese

No never took anti depressants, but my adhd hyperfocus made me read lots of articles about MAOI's on pubmed and stuff. Basically tldr they have around 80% success in treating depression compared to 40% chance with ssri's. Also about 50% chance of curing severe depression.

Also read lots of anecdotal reports on it from few depresion related subs, almost everyone agreed maois were much better then ssri's.

My experience with depression is very weird, I was very depressed for a long time and then it suddenly stopped.
Now I'm not depressed, but I still have a lot of problems. Mainly lack of pharma grade amphetamine
