Even in less religious societies like modern England, people need football hooliganism to stay out of trouble

I've come to the conclusion that humans need something to worship. Maybe not you but humans in general.
You either worship God, or your favorite athlete, or singer, or actor or something else. Politician or pornstar. The average person will go nuts without some leader or higher power.

Religion is still the best distraction because unlike the other options, it also encourages hard work amongst mid tier believers. Mormons, SevenDayAdventists as well as Catholics in the USA, as an example.
