Bone is lost all over the skeleton as you age, almost in correspondence to falling sex hormone levels in the blood. Face is no exception. Incidentally, the more bone a person has in their face the more support the overlaying muscles, fat pads, and skin have, and the more bone can be lost before saggy looks come about.
I also think this is why masculine, robust male faces tend to look good even past midlife.
