curious, what do you think depictions of hell/heaven in religious texts then? for me it's mostly symbolic than literal. like if you do wrong things you will be in a state of torment and that's the 'hell', and to prevent societies from being anarchic (hell). paradise is mostly the value of hope translated into a realm after we die.

Funny you bring that up. IIRC, in Islam, hell isn’t a place. It’s a being wherein the souls of the condemned go. I’m not entirely sure. But you do have an interesting view. It seems that only heaven is a literal place in Islam, whereas hell is more symbolic than a place, but suffering will happen and it’s pretty well-thought out. For example, the Qur’an speaks of the flames boiling a person’s skin; and then it will rejuvenate again; so it will be a continuous, torturous/painful process. To me, there is a scientific angle in that. It correctly implies that one stops feeling things because of nerve death that can occur. It’s things like this that strengthen my belief in Islam. How could a 7th century illiterate man (the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is said to have been illiterate in every sense of the word, he could not read nor write even though the Qur’an is a masterpiece of Arabic knowledge, something even Christian Arabs acknowledge; plus he didn’t know of the stories about the prophets before him, and even the Jewish scholars he discussed with said he was right about the things he was saying in terms of what they believed in personally) have knowledge of this? So to me, it’s mind-blowing, and one of the many evidences of the truthfulness of Islam (and the Last Messenger).

Sorry to hear about your sister. There are people who had NDEs (Near Death Experiences) that actually made them religious. However, personally I don’t think it’s a valid argument. In my ever so bleak opinion; I am convinced that these NDEs are just caused by brain chemicals, but after death, our brains and its chemicals cease to exist, so we won’t experience that after death. Now if our organs never decayed, I would have had a different opinion but there is no evidence that there is life after that, beyond religious texts (but that isn’t really proof, that’s just having faith, I guess I lost my faith along the way).

Wasn't Muhammad a merchant by profession? That means he'd have have high exposure to Jewish and Christians oral traditions from dealing with traders in nearby regions and passer-by's? That would explain the stories from previous prophets. Especially as Egypt, Persia and Byzantium was nearby.

I see. Well, I believe the deeds show that you are submitting to God (that’s what Islam means. Submission. Not peace like many western Islamic people will make you believe… submission to God). You can only show your submission to God through your deeds. But another thing that isn’t talked about often are one’s intentions. If you were on your way to the mosque for prayers during the Friday prayer, but you didn’t make it in time, then you still get the reward because your intention was to pray. But if you choose not to go, then you are once again showing you’re not submitted to God. Though to be fair, no one is ever truly submitted to God, that’s why I don’t use the term Muslim, because it refers to a person who has fully submitted to God. When I tell this to another Islamic person, they start arguing and coping, because they don’t want to admit their faults. It’s an ego thing but unironically having an ego is against Islamic beliefs as well.

Not really, imagine you are a trader working in a region that's heavily influenced by multiple cultures, from gossip, attending other people's homes and invitations to campfires, you'll pick up their traditions. In fact, trade/merchantile activity is actually how Islam spread in many communities, it wasn't simply violent conquests or missionary activities (that's more of a Christian thing).

In encounters like that, people might have said what they believed in (i.e. “Oh, I can’t buy that, it goes against my beliefs.”) they wouldn’t go, “So basically our prophet did such and such. He went to X place and did Y, then went to Y place and did Z.” You just get the surface knowledge rather than the in-depth knowledge.

By the way, Indonesia became Islamic through contact with Arab traders. But the thing is, the Arabs weren’t preaching their faith. They were just doing their thing.

The Indonesian locals noticed that the Arabs were being much more fair compared to the Europeans they had dealt with. That’s what prompted their curiosity, they asked the Arab traders why they were being fair. Then they explained that it’s because of their religion, Islam. That is how the faith spread in Indonesia.

That kind of ties with my idea that they weren’t there to preach religion. Even in the case of Arab merchants in Indonesia. It just happened because the locals expressed interest.

My family is Islamic. I actually stopped being religious once I started going to high school, and spent years being irreligious, until I turned 20. I didn’t blindly go into Islam, I started doing research and everything made a lot of sense.
