I was born and raised here, in online circles I say I’m Dutch (but add that I’m not ethnically Dutch), and then in real life, I just say I’m Pakistani when asked.

Hmm well I wouldn’t say the UK is one of those places. Canada, USA, sure. They’re melting pots after all. So, while I agree with your overall take, it’s just that it’s easier to say I’m Dutch, because when I say I’m Pakistani, people assume I’m living there. It clears any confusion immediately when I say I’m Dutch. Or Dutch of Pakistani origin. But that wouldn’t make sense either since I was born and raised here.

I just say im american, even though its the country I have lived for the shortest period of my life although im ethnically ukranian and spent my childhood there until moving 7 years ago

Hmm.. why is that? If it can be said about the UK, then it can be said in the Netherlands as well. In fact, if you ask any left-wing or even the government themselves, they will tell you that I’m Dutch. They see the Netherlands as a multi-ethnic society, rather than just reserving that term for the ethnically Dutch. That said, we do have terms that differentiate natives from non-natives. We have “allochtonen,” which refers to people whose parents or at least one parent was born elsewhere, and we have “autotochtonen,” which refers to people whose parents were born in the Netherlands. Technically speaking, though, even non-whites would be considered “autochtoon” if a person’s parents were born in the country despite not being ethnically Dutch. Ah, and we also have “niet-westerse allochtonen,” which means “non-western allochtonen.” Yes, you can call yourself American because it’s a melting pot, and you have the luxury of being white(-passing), so no one’s going to question you. Although I am aware of the subsection of the American population who believe only white Americans can be American, but that is flawed logic since they are relatively recent migrants if you compare them to Native Americans.

Hm. I never registered the UK as a melting pot, but I guess things change overtime. That’s probably where NL is heading. I mean, in some cities they speak English as the first language since people barely speak Dutch. Kinda crazy.

I quit the job because of my sleeping problems, but also because I had more tasks than I expected; I mean, my shifts were doable, but I was also expected to learn about furnitures and whatnot, and I’m kind of forgetful, prone to making mistakes. So I thought it was better to quit. Hmm I’d have said it publicly, but I have some concerns for privacy. Grade school, what’s that, like.. is it high school? Nice, enjoy your stay in the US!
