An incident known as the historical monkey massacre in Istanbul occurred during the reign of Sultan Murad III, instigated by his favored preacher, Abdülkerim. [1]

• • The Instigator: A prominent mullah and preacher named Abdülkerim, who held great influence and was known for his intense hostility toward minorities, turned his sights on imported African monkeys that had become popular pets and novelties in the Ottoman capital. [1]
  • The Sermon: During a public religious sermon at a mosque, Mullah Abdülkerim claimed that these imported monkeys were being kept and used for "abominable purposes". [1]
  • The Slaugher: Fired up by the sermon, a furious mob surged into the streets of Istanbul and began slaughtering and hanging the animals across the city. Chronicles from the era noted that it became hard to find a single tree branch in parts of the city without a dead monkey hanging from it. [1]
  • Aftermath: Following the event, locals who witnessed the brutality mockingly nicknamed Abdülkerim "maymunkeş" (meaning "monkey-slayer" or "one who has an obsession/enmity with monkeys"). When the mullah eventually died, local animal lovers and critics reportedly organized a festival in response. [1]
