You're probably just ugly, I look below average and I'm also a little short, wherever I go and talk with a new person - in a store, bar, mall, supermarket, etc. I get the same treatment: a weird look, followed by a few seconds of pause before they answer, a lot of time I'm asked to repeat the question even though when I approach these new people I intentionally speak louder, slower and enunciate every word clearly so there wouldn't be any misunderstanding - it doesn't seem to make a difference, I'm still asked to repeat what I just said...
