isekai is a genre of anime/manga where the protagonist is usually a shonen (young guy usually teenager) thats usually a bored loner that suddenly gets transported into a fantasy world i.e. he gets sucked into his favorite videogame

as an classic 90s anime example there is digimon although they dont have the usual tropes of the genre (and the anime debuted in 1999, there's lots of earlier 90s examples of isekai)

IMHO the one that set the mainstream standards of contemporary isekai is SAO - sword art online
