One of the inventors of the transistor (Shockley) had said that it was plausible someone could've invented the transistor in 1915 or so instead of 1948 if they'd been particularly lucky. That would maybe be the course of events in the alternate universe in which computing technology is similar to 2022 levels in 1989 or so to create your "what if" scenario, OP.

There may have been a lot more STDs in such a universe if other aspects of technological development were further behind computing technology (in this alternate 1980s). Hypergamy generally would've just ramped up more quickly and all the films with John Cusack and other regular guys like that getting the cute girl (and having that seem plausible) would likely have never been made.
