just enough for the lashes to be visible but it depends on the set point of your eyes, really deep set eyes tend to have really shit eyelash visibility even without hooding but only of the orbital is compact.

they're already long, the 'hood' pushes the eyelash down which makes them straight, it prevents that curled up look even if you have the genes for it.
