A distinguishing feature is any visible facial trait that separates you from the genetic average in your region or country, although now days due to globalisation we can can assume that because of interconnectedness on social media, we can assume shit like curly hair or shades of skin dont matter as much. I will mainly be talking about things that makes your face identifiable in seconds. From an evolutionary standpoint, memorability matter alot. Humans notice rarity and contrast, this is even why blonde and brown hair became widespread as those with such genetic mutations in early European settlers would procreate more and were assumed to be more attractive. This is not an opinion or theory, historically speaking, 'Distinguishing Features' will increase your SMV heavily. Research in face perception shows that distinctive faces are remembered more easily than perfectly average ones (Valentine, 1991, “A Unified Account of the Effects of Distinctiveness, Inversion, and Race in Face Recognition,” published in the journal Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology). Memorability builds on status and presence. In a competitive mating market, being forgettable is worse than being slightly imperfect. This isnt the only one as well, there are countless other studies that I will try to remember to link at the end.
HETROCHROMIA:
Heterochromia is the strongest distinguishing features you can have because it maximizes contrast in the highest-attention area of the face: the eyes. Human interaction is eye dominant. People subconsciously scan the eye region first to assess emotion and mainly societal ques, to ensure you look NT which is why the whole squinting with the tiktok 'PSl stare is retarded. When the irises are different in colour, that contrast creates an immediate visual interruptio and interruption creates fixation. It’s rarity increases perceived genetic distinctiveness. Same effect as the brown and blonde hair as I mentioned earlier.
The effect is strongest on lighter to medium skin tones where the sclera (white of the eye) and iris pigmentation already stand out clearly, the colour difference becomes more visible and striking under natural light. On very deep skin tones it can still be powerful but the overall facial contrast pattern matters more, stuff like strong scleral contrast and clear skin amplify the effect. Which is why if you just only have coloured eyes, its still important you have a clear sklera to make it pop. Lighter eye colours paired with darker hair or brows tend to produce the most dramatic impact because of the high contrast dynamic, although this point could be countered with the whole hair colour example so it depends on preferences I suppose.
SCARS:
Small faint scars can elevate a face when they align with strong structure. The key variable is placement and scale. A faint scar across the eyebrow, upper cheek, or near the jawline reinforce angularity instead of disrupting it, which is why it looks best on robust skulls with prominent structures. These areas already follow natural bone lines, so a subtle break in the skin will not breaking harmony. There’s also a' primal' layer to it that you could argue although I think this is bullshit, minor facial scars can subconsciously physical competence and women love that feeling of being protected. In men especially, that can increase perceived toughness and edge.
However large, asymmetrical or deep tissue scars will reduce harmony, so keep that in mind if youre thinking about giving yourself one.
FRECKLES:
Freckles are a pigment based distinguishing feature, which is why they can work so well when theyre evenly spread. They add slight contrast across the nose and upper cheeks, breaking up flat skin and giving the face more depth under normal lighting. The brain reads them as genetic variation, not structural flaw, as long as the skin itself is clear. They can be replicated with henna although it wont be as dark as some natural freckles.
Obviously they look best on lighter to medium skin tones, no one going to see freckles on brown or black skin so this is European exclusive where the contrast is visible but not overwhelming. On very pale skin they can increase perceived youthfulness and softness. Important to not mix this up with uneven pigmentation like hyperpigmentation from post acne, I'm sure you can tell the difference unless youre a fucking neanderthal.

ACNE/BLEMISHES:
Unlike freckles or small stable marks, acne and active blemishes signal skin instability. From a biological standpoint, clear skin is strongly associated with health, hormonal balance and youth. When the skin is inflamed or bloated the brain reads it as stress or imbalance. That immediately lowers SMV because health cues are foundational in mate selection. Health indicators matter more than people think.
There’s also the texture factor. Acne disrupts smooth light reflection across the face so instead of clean highlights along the cheekbones or jaw, you get scattered shadows and redness. Even strong bone structure can look softer or less defined when the skin quality is poor. There is also ofcourse the health indicator of smooth collagen rich skin that Im not going to explain in depth but I'm sure you know.
Large blemishes, cystic acne, or heavy hyperpigmentation also draw attention away from high value areas like the eyes. Instead of fixation on your prominent areas like eyes or zygos, attention shifts to skin irregularities. Health indicators people I know you know

Here is a list of sources that I either skimmed over or did not read at all, but if you want to better ur understanding and want to evidence, here is it:
