It depends on the message you want to convey, generally if it has to be mass, it is better to focus on arousing emotions. See Titanic (I know it's different, but that's how it is).

In movies like the count of monte cristo, the mc loses everything but gains everything back at the end with almost no losses, so theres very little emotional investment. If not the hero, atleast some of the main cast has to die imo. titanic is actually a decent example

Tbh I'm too lazy to list all of them so I'll just say the ones that are there and are from my favorites are Pulp Fiction, Psycho, Vertigo, Scarface, Heat and American Beauty
