He realistically had 0 chance with that girl because of his look, his behavior was 100% adaptively sound. Blue Pill culture want to point at his personality, but what they don't realize is that the root cause of his defeatist behavior stems from his look. His behavioral attitude of lowering oneself to clearly indicate that he isn't attempting to seduce her is, from an ancestral perspective, a more viable strategy than trying hitting on her and be 100% rejected while incurring the unnecessary risks of lowering his mate value by being rejected (other women are not interested in males that are rejected by other women, why make it formal) and possibly making himself enemy with other males in the group that want to ensure the monopolization her reproductive output. All of this boil down to adjusting one's behaviors factoring his SMV and her SMV. The guy actually seemed pretty at ease, there clearly is nothing wrong with him, the "problem" here is that he is genetic trash and he is smart enough to realize it and adjusts consequently his behaviors.
