The celibacy and Valentine's part is just embellishment because I've hardly ever cared about that. Losing the coping mechanism of taking care of an animal is draining though. Many elderly people end up in that situation of their only obligation being their pet.

He had regular cat food (seafood/chicken leftover stuff). I wasn't the one buying it though because he wasn't my cat. Cats can eat plant-based food (or lab-grown meat) but it has to be amped up with certain synthetic nutrients (taurine).

At the vet, all of the staff were women. They care more about pets but that doesn't matter as much among poor people. Also, many women (in the US) have a pet even if they have a GL boyfriend.
