Gohans turning point wasn't his friends being slaughtered, it wasn't Goku betraying him by throwing him into the cell fight, or anything of substance. Instead, it was Android 16 dying. The audience barely cares about him, let alone Gohan.

While it looked cool, it was just bad writing. Compare that to the EARNED SSJ1 of Trunks in the movie, and it's clear which is better.
Trunks comes to see the aftermath of his father figure and mentor being slaughtered by the Androids, and only in such grief does he find power, making it the perfect parallel to the death of Krillin and it propelling Goku to SSJ1.
