It's called a Fisherian runaway - how sexual selection influences evolution, the males with certain traits are chosen by the females and get to mate and spread their genes. However some traits might not be beneficial for survival and could lead to the extinction of a species, for example some birds would grow huge feathers and tails to attract females, but this also makes them much easier prey for predators, while the males with smaller feathers can survive more easily, but won't be chosen by the females for mating.

Something similar happens now with humans too - the tall, attractive guys are chosen by women, while the shorter and uglier are rejected, even though they might be smarter, more resilient, etc. - over many generations this could dumb down and weaken the human race eventually bringing its extinction.
