Increasing muscle mass might not be ideal if you're main goal is to get leaner face

Since fat-free mass + fat mass = total body mass ;
Therefore the same FM doesn't equal the same BF% among people with different FFM ( X amount of fat mass doesn't look the same on a twink and bbuilder ).
Paired with the fact that most people feel frail when are <10%BF,

Wouldn't losing muscle actually be preferable if your ultimate goal is to have as little face fat as possible without feeling the consuquences of being too lean?

I always believed that gaining more muscle mass + lower body fat changes the distribution of fat which makes your face appear leaner.

I can see that happening only if the guy is not natty. I don't believe it's naturally possible to increase T levels to the point of drastically changing fat distribution

No the point is to get lean without looking like a twink so just get leaner even if your fat mass is higher

No, I wasn't implying from T levels. Not sure the mechanism but I don't remember, hoping someone else can elaborate, but it's something to do with like surface area? I'm not even sure. But really then body fat percentage wouldnt' matter, because if you're higher weight with the same bodyfat then you would technically have more fat. Then it doesn't make sense to measure leanness with body fat
