For opposite-sex ratings, men rated women 54.23/100, while women rated men 33.70/100.
Ratings were collected from standardized photos with neutral expressions, homogeneous backgrounds, and no makeup, hats, or sunglasses.
Self-ratings were higher than ratings from other people, with the discrepancy particularly large among men: men rated themselves 61.82, compared with 42.81 from male raters and 33.70 from female raters.
BMI was negatively associated with other-rated attractiveness in both sexes. Height was also negatively associated with men's attractiveness ratings in this sample.
More attractive participants were more likely to be in longer-term romantic relationships.
Higher attractiveness was associated with higher self-esteem and lower trait anxiety. Self-rated attractiveness was additionally associated with lower neuroticism and a more positive view of the past.
The relationship between self-rated and externally rated attractiveness was positive but modest (r = .16 overall).
