Well, it's their culture, you should respect it, every country has a similar festival, where people gather and throw with various stuff at others:

Italy - oranges.


Spain - tomatoes.


India - cow dung.

They both produce huge quantities of oranges and tomatoes so they can easily use the overripe ones for these festivals, without missing them.
India on the other hand, doesn't have as much resources or stuff that they can just throw away, but they have plenty of stray cows, and cow poop is pretty much everywhere, so this is how this festival probably started...
