The music in the restaurant was too loud, but Rohan barely noticed. He was staring across the small, candlelit table at Priya, waiting for her to say something—anything—that would make the last ten minutes make sense.
"I just think we need different things right now, Rohan," Priya said, her eyes fixed on her cloth napkin as she folded it into tighter and tighter squares.
"Different things?" Rohan repeated, his voice dropping an octave. They had been together for three years. They had survived long-distance during college, endless family dinners, and two shared apartment leases. "Priya, yesterday we were looking at paint swatches for the living room."
"I know," she murmured. "And I’m sorry. But my mind is made up."
"Is there someone else?" Rohan asked, the question tasting like copper in his mouth.
Priya paused. She finally looked up, her expression a mix of guilt and absolute resolve. "Yes."
Rohan swallowed hard, trying to process the sudden collapse of his entire future. "Who is he? Is it someone from work? Someone from your gym?"
"It’s Gamer," she said simply.
Rohan blinked, waiting for a punchline or a last name. "Gamer? What kind of name is Gamer? Is that a nickname?"
"It's just Gamer," Priya replied, standing up from the table and pulling her coat around her shoulders. "I'm leaving with Gamer."
Before Rohan could move or say another word, Priya walked toward the front entrance of the restaurant. Through the wide glass doors, Rohan watched as she stepped out into the evening rain, opened the passenger side door of a waiting car, and got inside with Gamer.
Rohan sat alone at the table, the untouched dinner growing cold in front of him, trying to comprehend how everything he knew had just been replaced by Gamer.
