Multiple reasons in my opinion.

--Most likely doesn't want to beat a woman infront of his child.

-Doesnt want to escalate the problem

-Hoping she sees through her ways

-Doesnt want the relationship to end

It's a very classic victim mindset, which tends to lead to the abuser to continue doing it and usually much worse.
