ExactlyYes, TikTok girls speak in terms of what Julia Kristeva calls the semiotic register of language, as opposed to the symbolic register. The semiotic refers to the rhythmic elements of speech given to language by the maternal rhythms of the womb to which the baby is exposed prior to its introduction into the symbolic order. While the semiotic only necessarily manifests through the symbolic, it nonetheless exceeds it and produces affective, emotional, rhythmic, and paralinguistic residues that cannot be systematized. Though these are not ideas or thoughts properly speaking, and the semiotic is internal rather than external to language, it is a world of communication that cannot be understood using traditional tools of linguistics and arguably cannot be systematized at all. Given that TikTok exploits the rhythmic rather than symbolic aspects of speech given the affordances of the medium and the phones used to operate it, it can be said to work the semiotic rather than symbolic aspects of language more fully. An entire extralinguistic world of communication, governed by finger swipes, glances, brief motions (TikTok dances), movements of the eyes, and laughter.
