in about january of 2026 i got referred to an orthodontist. (Family custody problems made me unable to attend regular checkups, therefore elongating the wait time) I previously had an 11mm overbite (in england, an overbite of 9mm+ is Grade 5 (Very great / extreme need, putting me ahead so i skipped the wait that my other friends have) it has now decreased to around 8mm as i got given a twin block retainer, to push the lower jaw forward. Personally its worked amazing but a shit ton of a hassle to wear and very clunky which has reduced my appetite due to me having to remove at every snack/ meal and just because of the 2 big blocks in my mouth. However, my orthodontist also proposed jaw surgery along with the option of twin blocks but i would have to wait till i turn old enough for the surgery to be performed (which is 2 years or so) i havent really been wearing the retainer recently especially since school started because it makes me look like a down syndrome kid. (Minimum reccomended wear is 22+hrs) Should i continue wearing them as ive made decent progress now or instead wait for the jaw surgery?
