I used to read loads of books but stopped in my mid teens, which is unfortunate because that was when I was beginning to attain the mental capacity to understand and appreciate great literature.

I started watching loads of films at that time and became a movie buff but I feel I missed out on a great hobby by falling out of the habit of reading.

A few months ago I read American Psycho which is supposed to be a masterpiece but maybe it went over my head because I thought it was good, but kind of silly sometimes. I appreciated the comedy in it but I found it hard to identify the themes that were obviously present in the film. Maybe I'm just not smart enough idk.

I also read most of the Bible and thought it was really good.

Anyway, I want to get back into the habit by reading a great book; I just finished school so want a new hobby.

I've found these charts from 4chan and Pinterest of excellent novels, and there are a few books I'm leaning towards:

Blood Meridian because I just replayed rdr1 and am in Western mode at the moment.

The Brothers Karamazov because I have always loved pre-Soviet Russian history and aesthetics. Although I have heard that you should start with Dostoyevsky's other works before reading it.

The Catcher in the Rye and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas because I own both of them.

Any reccomendations?

"Future" by Dmitry Glukhovsky is an insanely well written social commentary, very thought provoking as well as a great story.

Yeah, I got books on general chemistry. fraxctals, chaos, power laws, physics. I want to buy some books on politics and war though.

I was the same then I stopped after I graduated. My life now requires being low IQ, unquestioning, unthinking robot to my paymasters.

I’m constantly reading Nietzsche works nowadays (Thus Spoke Zarathustra at the moment) as I have found I can relate to a lot of his thoughts.

19th century Russian prose is a goldmine, Pushkin’s Onegin, Dostoevsky’s Brothers Karamazov, Sorokin’s Crime and Punishment, Tolstoy’s War and Peace etc. these are all great reads.

I usually listen to audiobooks instead of reading them. There is so much time in my day where I need to focus my vision at the stuff I’m doing (showering, gym, commuting, cooking, cleaning etc.) but not my ears, so whenever this happens I choose an intellectual podcast or audibook and put it as background noise.

I mentioned Nietzsche above, that’s actually an exception that I do read manually as philosophy needs some digesting.

I don't want to come off as a pretentious know-it-all but everyone and their retarded dog knows who Tarantino is

Could I start with Brothers Karamazov? I'm interested in it because I heard an excerpt where a character was describing when the Turks raped their way through Bulgaria decapitating people in an apologetics video and it was written so well it really pulled me in.

Also isn't Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky

I can’t speak for others but as @Debetro has asked, consuming a book (on either paper or in audio) takes time and effort, so before starting anything, I think about what read could benefit me in some way.

I usually have some thoughts in my mind, which I try to expand by looking up historical writers who have also wondered about the topic (spoiler: basically whatever you can think of, somebody sometime ago has already wondered about it).

I mentioned Nietzsche above - I got to him because recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of God and whether religion is only just a certain stairstep in humanity’s cultural evolution or it is built in us. Nietzche at the end of the 19th century argued whether the West has already surpassed the need for their old God, which connects to my original idea.

Publishing industry is controlled by (((them))) so most books these days are a bunch of cucked bullshit. Only stuff from the pre-2000s or early 2000s era is worth checking out.
