On 27 March 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, a Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk flown by Dale Zelko was shot down near Buđanovci, Serbia by a Serbian air-defense unit commanded by Zoltán Dani using an S-125 surface-to-air missile system.
Zelko ejected safely and was rescued hours later by U.S. forces.
More than a decade after the war, the two men contacted each other and eventually met in person. Zelko traveled to Serbia, visited Dani’s village and bakery, and the former enemies became friends.
It’s often cited as a powerful example of reconciliation between soldiers who once fought on opposite sides.
So basically, the pilot of the F-117, and the guy who was the enemy at that time who shot down the F-117, met years later and ended up being close friends.
The men knew that hating each other over something stupid like war is pointless.
