Overview
Aminophylline is used as an treatment for acute asthma, but I won’t explain why because it’s unnecessary.
In 5 studies topical Aminophyllin in form of cream or ointment was applied to one thigh and later compared to the other, untreated thigh, in one study the cream was applied to the waist.
Results
Except for one study, there was a significant difference in fat reduction on the treated thigh compared to the untreated with an average thigh circumference difference of 1.37cm.
The waist circumference on the treated group was 11±1.0cm and 5±0.6cm on the control group, so there was an 6±1.6cm difference.
active ingredient concentration
Higher Concentration doesn’t equal better results. The Greenway et al. Trial 4 used the highest concentration with an 10.0% cream but there was only an difference of 0.77±0.66cm measured.
The concentration with the best results was 0.5% with results as 3.08±0.27cm difference or 6±1.6cm difference (on the waist as stated in the overview).
How often to apply
Im just gonna talk about the 0.5% studies, because they showed the best Results. In the Greenway et al. trial 6 the cream was applied five times a week for 5 weeks and in the Caruso et al. the cream was applied twice a day for 12 weeks.
The Caruso et al. showed better results, but the problem is that the treatment was 12 weeks long and the greenway et al. was only 5 weeks long, on top of that, the cream was used on two different body parts.
Sides
Basically none significant, the only side effect was skin rashes but in the studies with the 0.5% cream, there were no sides reported at all and these are the only interesting ones.
so no Sides
Why it’s interesting to us
I think everyone could have already guessed it, but the cream could also be applied to the cheeks or the submental region the decrease the fat there.
Problem is, there are no studies on that so it’s everything based on thigh and waist studies with mostly women, but I guess it should work the same way on the face because it just decreases subcutaneous fat.
Here is the study I mainly used:
The efficacy of topical aminophylline in local fat reduction: A systematic review - PMC
Some studies have reported that the topical forms with aminophylline as the active ingredient appear to be relatively effective on local fat burning while having no/minimal side effects. This systematic review accumulates all of the data on the ...
