IQ is definitely overstated. The correlation coefficient between income and IQ was 0.3, this means that 0.3^2 = 0.09 = 9% of the variance between people's income is accounted for by IQ. The remaining 91% is everything else, so like family income, educational attainment, attractiveness, height, health, whatever. For reference, a correlation coefficient of 0.3 between two sets looks like this on a plot.

Imagine IQ being on the x-axis and income being on the y-axis, the dots are employed people. If you look closely then you can vaguely see an upwards trend as IQ increases, but it's not a slam dunk. It's important to take IQ into account if a society is thinking about making some new large-scale policy that will include hundreds of thousands of people, or when recruiting into the army, etc. However, it's not that predictive for you personally.
