Worried ill gain a substantial amount of fat.

This is from the study (see below)

Measured Study Results (8-Week Resistance Training Protocol)

  • ~150–170 kcal/day surplus (Maintenance Target) = -1.4 mm skinfold thickness change (essentially no fat gain; +0.4 kg or +0.5% total mass gained over 8 weeks)
  • ~490 kcal/day surplus (Moderate 5% Target) = +10.0 mm skinfold thickness increase (fat mass accumulation; +2.3 kg or ~0.36% body mass gain per week)[
  • ~720 kcal/day surplus (High 15% Target) = +12.4 mm skinfold thickness increase (heavy fat mass accumulation; +3.3 kg or ~0.50% body mass gain per week)

General Research Guidelines & Recommendations

  • ~150–300 kcal/day surplus (5–10% surplus above maintenance) = ~0.25% body mass gain per week, primarily supporting muscle growth with minimal fat accumulation[5][6].
  • ~300–500+ kcal/day surplus (10–20% surplus above maintenance) = ~0.25–0.50% body mass gain per week, resulting in disproportionately higher rates of fat accumulation with minimal additional strength or muscle growth gains[5].
