Makes a lot of sense. I think if I adopted a kid in the future, I'd only do so if his parents are dead. The parents being alive would make me uncomfortable and it would also just feel like I'm doing their work

that's why in islam "adoption" doesn't exist.
the adoption in western juridical law means you take the kid, you raise him, he is legally your kid and take your name no matter if he has parents.
While in Islam, it's called kafala, you raise them, you help them especially if they'r orphans, but they'll never take your name or be your kids, there is a clear distinction, it's a clear act out of pure charity.
