Is female sex selection for height an evolutionary dead-end (i.e, what are the benefits of being tall in the 21st century)?

In previous by-gone eras, there would be a very good reason for women to sexually select for taller mates, in that the environment was rough, size was equated with strength (also important), and hunting and gathering (both activities requiring strong children) were the primary means of procuring food. However, in the age of projectile weaponry such as guns and ammo, what are the evolutionary advantages to being tall? Not only do you consume more resources (which are now far more finite than in previous eras) but you also are a far more likely target of projectile weaponry.

I'd argue that it's probably more beneficial for the human race in the long term to eventually get below 5'4; But due to the ancient sexual preferences of women biologically encoded into their DNA, this will take many mutations to achieved, and thus will not happen for thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years (less generations occurring in more time, too)


Is height destined to become a vestigial trait that will become supplanted by women reproducing with shorter men? Or will height become a maladaptive genetic arms race that, the extinct Irish Elk, eventually lead to our species' demise?

As far as I know height increase since the war has stagnated and isn’t getting much taller, average height might increase to Netherlands height levels if women are as sexually selective and with good genetics and diet, but I doubt we’ll be much taller without new eugenic technology

My parents are chinese, my dad is 5'9, my mom is 4'11 and I ended up 6' because unlike them I never suffered hunger and ate a lot of meat.

Not really cheap I think but they're experts in asian interventions, you don't want low cost stuff unless it's very basic things.

Resources are still not scarce and they won't be in future. The difference between what tall men need and what short men need is not that big anyway, there will never be a famine in a country because men are too tall.

Humans will probably start to manipulate their genes in future, so it won't matter what traits are important in the natural state. If being tall is bad, we will manipulate our genes so that it won't be bad anymore instead of sacrificing millions of years of evolutionary preferences.

I think its more of a sign that your parents or you were able to get enough food back in the day which correlates with other stuff
