Is going to college for software engineering worth it?

If you get a job the job itself will probably mog most other majors but social life both in college and in work is going to be a big downgrade compared to business etc.

Is it a good idea?

Not if you weren’t programming as a hobby since you were a kid. Everybody and their mother thinks it’s the only route to upper middle class in 2022 but there are quite a few better college career paths especially if you also got the looks and social skills for it

No, you don't need a degree in this field. If you want the best of both worlds, enroll in something relatively easy with good social life like psych or biz and learn coding after hours

College is a scam if you aren’t high IQ and NT! :feelswhy:

cs degrees have got girls nowadays too and chads, just prepare to meet some nerds too and theyll may mog ur cs knowledge initially but you can mog them with time if youre smarter

u need a degree and if your uni is good they can land you a job short after or you can get into a 1 year masters in a worldwide top uni just for the connections and sure 6k figures job landing

the degree will push u into studying and be more strict, he will give up and quit trying to self teach this field + he will need to overachieve in projects for any company to look at him

Worthless degree
Every degree is worthless unless it's from an ivy/russell uni, it's 2022 nigga, you either have 5 years of experience or know people. Psych will give you a good college experience, which sounds important to you. If you wanna make a living from coding, CS is a waste of time and 3-4 years of boredom

dont even think about it your looks will be a major halo in job interviews, they will feel relief seeing you after 1000 subhuman curries even if ure worse than them

Like what?:feelsping:
Economics / finance / accounting / business -> high finance (investment banking, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital), BIG4 firms, management consulting at McKinsey, BCG or Bain -> getting an MBA down the road and going into management

Law -> lawyer or biglaw firms

Medicine -> private clinics or become a surgeon

etc etc

If you are high IQ, look good & have good social skills software engineering is kind of a waste. The pay might sound high but in reality it just pays a lot straight out of college but it doesn’t scale well; it’s still a technical job at the end of the day, you are levels below management

Software is good if you are exceptionally good at it but if that was the case you’d already be solving google kickstarts at 14yo

have you seen empoylement rates in msc programms of top worldwide unis just a few months after completion? if he cant get into such a uni for bachelors he can do it for a useless msc just for the connections and top tier job supposing his bachelors uni is good enough and he has good grades (also you supposedly learn some more stuff)

Worthless degree
Psych is a very good degree for your looks level.

it turns any opinion you have on other people into a scientific fact. You can get a fun job just talking shit and speculating about people ez

You can work in software without CS/Engineering experience if you pursue project management - they get paid high salaries for talking with people most of the day. You try to plan out projects, convince engineers to get stuff done on time, talk with clients about requirements/expectations, etc.

I heard Brazil is good too but mainly because the cost of living is way lower while having a good salary.

Software is ideal for people that don't want to dedicate their lives to their work.
When someone becomes a doctor or a lawyer, that's their life. They invest so much time into getting there and then their entire life revolves around that until they die.
Whereas in software you have plenty of WFH opportunities and unlimited vacation time. It's extremely easy to take a few months off with no work on a whim then go find another equally prestigious job, and you're wrong to say software doesn't scale well. Senior software engineers make bank and people often get promoted from junior to senior after 1-2 years.

This isn't even mentioning the SHEER AMOUNT of schooling a lawyer or doctor must go through along with the rigorous testing. That's many years of their lives spent reading books spending a fuck ton of money in law/med school preparing for exams. Meanwhile the software engineer is stacking 6 figure paychecks for all those years, building their wealth.

Law/medicine is the best way to fast track yourself to alcoholism and an early death from stress.
I wouldn't recommend CS for everyone though, not everyone is built for this type of thinking and many people get weeded out of classes early on.
Plus this is the best career path if you want to become self-employed.

Ideally you'd get an American work permit and work remotely from Brazil, they might pay you American salary too.

Look into being an Actuary it pays quite well.
But imo software engineering mogs 99% of careers and if you're good at math you can definitely handle CS trust me. There's a lot of average/low IQ people that make it in this field through brute force.

Thats the point. Making good money while young is everything.

You can be a very average coder with just decent but not excpetionally good logical thinking ability and still earn way above median salary for your area you live. Probs even double the median salary for your area srs- and we work 35 hour work weeks whereas all those careers you mentioned its very common to work 60 hour weeks and not unheard of to even work 70 or 80 hour weeks

Some days I jsut write two lines of code send an email or two and then just postmax here all day

Way i see it work is just a way to be able to do your hobbies in your free time meaning pay and hours is most important.

I'd rather have a good social life outside of work than have a nice work environment with lots of girls but work long hours.

If it means i'll have more money and freedom 100% i would. Sweden is kind of weird with our high school system but i went with the stem group and it wasn't too bad. We need specific requirements to get into a college alongside the right grades so you can't become a engineer if going business in high school.

They have completely different career paths and scaling. Finance has a well estabilished pipeline, you are the workhorse when you start out of college and as you move up the ladder it’ll get better and pay scales very well, with it status

Programming pays offers a good pay with good hours out of college because you rely on your technical skills, which you constantly have to train, else your knowledge will become obsolete very fast. Unless you plan to move up into managemenet, there’s not much of a career path, you’ll go from junior to senior in a few years but that’s it

Coding is good for people who want an easy ticket to upper middle class but it won’t grant you status and you cannot put your social skills into work in it, suifuel for people with type A personalities - that is for average programmers of course. The talented ones, who’ve been coding from their childhood are going to places

Its so obvious you're biased from majoring in finance :lul:

The path for programmers is from junior to senior to staff to architect/tech lead. Main downside is that you’ll usually be overlooked for executive positions.

I’ve started in CS but have changed my mind after the first year. I feel like at this point "learn to code" became the career version of the "just take a shower" phrase of the dating world

Tech is a very good field with great job prospects but it's far from being the only good one - and it doesn't grant you societal status unlike certain other fields (which gets overlooked upon since the ones suggesting tech are often young guys themselves who are not aware how much status matters later in life, they only care about fast money)

It takes a very specific type of person to enjoy and be good at coding. These types of persons are many times overrepresented on internet forums so you are made to believe they are more numerous than in reality

its 2022, there are more and more normies and chill people in cs (even pretty girls from what ive seen) so i wouldnt worry about social life.
and its not a rocket science, you will have to put effort in the studying but the reward after it, the job, the salary, its all worth it.
