Historically women didn’t have access to education and thus the ability to have sufficient income, necessiting that women ‘date up’ in order to have a live. With rights being expanded for women, through voting, access to education, and comparable incomes to that of a man, they no longer NEED to date up in terms of education (which is associated with higher wealth obviously).

This is actually why looksmaxxing has become so prevalent.

Men didn’t need to focus on there looks in the past as just having a decent education and job would allow you to court, have a family etc,

Now that women don’t require men in the same way, it makes sense that women would look for more sexually desirable mates versus materialistically valuable

Educational hypergamy decreasing is only natural as income is becoming less important as a factor for women choosing prospective partners

Living conditions e.g. life expectancy was extremely low in the mid-late 1900s in those countries as well, making looks irrelevant relative to income
