A lot of overweight people in middle school become taller quicker. It could be that being fat makes you grow past your genetic potential but the speed you reach it is really fast (1-2 years) compared to the normal 3-5 years of longitudinal growth in puberty. Many people shared their experiences with overweight people being stunted earlier and this could be due to estrogen. Estrogen is responsible for some igf-1 pathways so it could help with short term growth.
Conversely, skinny people and underweight people seem to grow longer. Anecdotal, but I have a friend who was 6 ft 120 pounds(has beard and is hairy) but recently grew 3 inches at 18 and is now 19 and 6’3. Skinny people probably have lowered test and estrogen and this could allow them to grow for longer. But some suggest this is bad because being skinny may stunt growth. It’s hard to quantify if being skinny throughout puberty or being fat will give you more net height but I think being near 10-13% body fat is probably best to prolong the window for height growth.
